Evaluation of bone density in HIV patients is recommended by the present international guidelines for HIV management, but it is not a routine practice in Romania until now. The purpose of this study is to assess the prevalence of osteopenia in HIV+ patients from GalatiRomania. A cross sectional study of bone density mass evaluation by quantitative ultrasonography (QUS) measurements assessed 113 HIV+ patients without history of bone pathology, in comparison with 56 healthy volunteers (control group). Osteopenia was considered if Z-score of stiffness index was ≤-1. The prevalence of HIV related osteopenia is 29,2%, with higher frequency than in the control group (p=0,002; OR=4,78). Advanced HIV disease and HBV-coinfection increase the risk of HIV related osteopenia. Future health programs are necessary in order to prevent and monitor osteopenia in HIV+ Romanian patients.

Background When assessing comorbidities in HIV-infected patients, the bone and the kidney represent important target organs that can potentially be affected by both virus and antivirals. متن کاملThe Prevalence and Risk Factors of Hepatitis Delta Virus in HIV/HBV Co-Infected Patients in Shiraz, Iran, 2012
Evidence has shown that liver disease caused by hepatitis viruses can be more aggressive and severe in HIV infected subjects. Therefore, the present cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the seroprevalence of HDV infection among HIV/HBV co-infected clients in Shiraz, southwest Iran. In this study, 178 patients co-infected with HBV and HIV individuals were enrolled. The diagnosis of HIV infect...
متن کاملBone loss in the HIV-infected patient: evidence, clinical implications, and treatment strategies.
Osteoporosis is common in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected persons. The etiology of osteoporosis in HIV-infected patients is likely multifactorial, involving traditional risk factors such as low body weight, hypogonadism, and smoking, as well as direct effects of chronic HIV infection and antiretroviral therapy. Emerging evidence suggests that the increasing prevalence of osteoporosi...
